Red Kite Wildlife Warrior Certificate # 5

Mike Poyzer and Caroline Kew

Caroline and Mike were recommended for a wildlife warrior award by their environment group partners Steve and Chris Platt.

Ranger KF visited their garden to assess whether they are eligible for a Red Kite certification.

“Mike and Caroline have an extensive plot of land which includes woodland,  woodland margin, wild and well managed areas, ponds, fruit and veg patches. They use reclaimed and recycled products at every opportunity and strive to keep the wildlife that visit their garden as the focus for landscape and planting decisions they make. They are an excellent example of why an award could be given not only for what is being achieved but for having the attitude of ‘how can I achieve more?’”

Mike says
“A garden for wildlife.

Why is providing a habitat for wildlife important to me?

I recognised many years ago that we are not a separate part of the natural order in this world.

My first moment of enlightenment was when I applied home-made compost to the soil and noticed the increase in the number of worms and other small creatures. What was going on here I wondered?

The next most significant moment was reading the line in Small is Beautiful: by E F Schumacher… “If we win the fight against nature, we will be on the losing side”.

I attempt to do what I can in my garden to increase the opportunity and diversity for plants and animals to thrive, looking after the soil and growing based upon organic principles.

I continue to learn from reading, listening to those who have more knowledge than I and of course the greatest teacher of all, nature, observing how things work.

So, how I care for the small plot I have some influence over, is good for my wellbeing and good for those plants & creatures I share this journey with.”
