Broken branches, brash piles and birds
The heavy snowfall has caught out the trees who are yet to lose their leaves. The snow has put extra pressure on the branches and some have snapped under the extra weight. At our sites, trees such as Oak and Goat Willow have been the most affected.

But, everything is an opportunity. Out with the hand saw and onto a brash pile.

Brash piles are an excellent refuge for birds, small mammals and insects all year but especially in the cold and wet weather. It is likely that the centre is warmer and drier then the open environment. We often feed inside the brash pile as they also offer protection from predators, but during the cold, they can eat without travelling far.
As always, a block of lard gives an energy boost when food is harder to come by when snow is on the ground.
