A Welcome Companion

Such solace sought when set to strive
What comforts might a man derive
From company when back-bent to his toil
A sweet sung song a tendered trill
A heartfelt hymn to soothe and still
As Robin minds the man as mines the soil
A man must smile yet set to task
As Robin sings, as if to ask
The chance perhaps to settle and to feed
Beside the man who turns the earth
Uncovers all its hidden worth
In trade for that most soulful human need
For if we travel all alone
A road we choose to call our own
The journey seems to be a facile thing
At every step, a wise man knows
It serves him well where’re he goes
To take the time to hear a Robin sing
