Catkins are designed to catch the wind and spread pollen from the male part of the plant to the relatively inconspicuous female flower. Many trees are wind pollinated so they have no need for showy flowers or elaborate scents to attract insects. There is a world of wonder in the way trees ensure fertilisation and subsequent dispersal of seed. They really have it covered. Trees that have wind fertilisation often have wind dispersal. Catkins can be seen on trees such as Birch and Hazel for example , at this time of year.
