Free trees

Some trees will not automatically grow from a seed or nut as it lands on the ground. Some rely on the local wildlife to help their offspring grow. Jays and Squirrels are very good at dispersing Acorns and Conkers for example, but some need be eaten. This is called stratification. By eating the seed, the bird prepares it for germination.

These three young Yew trees are gifts from the birds. They were found in 3 neighbouring gardens and are of various ages. In order for Yew trees to grow, their red fleshy aril (the cup surrounding the seed) needs to first be eaten by a bird. When a bird roosts and leaves a deposit on the ground below, the seed will then be ready to grow into a Yew. You never know, possibly its new home for the next 100 years if it is lucky. Look out for young Yews in your garden. You may have a free gift from your local birds.
